The Median WBC Reign Has Stayed Between 314 and 438 Days in Every Full Decade

We grouped every completed reign with a full start and end date by the decade it began and took the median length of each group. Reigns starting in the 1960s have a median of 438 days (n=54); reigns starting in the 2010s have a median of 393 days (n=113). The lowest full-decade median is the 1980s at 314 days and the highest the 1960s at 438. A straight line fitted through all 640 reigns moves by about 1 day per decade and explains none of the spread (r² 0.000): more belts and more divisions have not made a typical WBC reign noticeably shorter or longer.

The 2020s column (median 370 days, n=50) is not comparable: it holds only reigns that have already ended, so the long-running current champions are missing from it. The 18 active reigns and 7 completed reigns without a printed day are excluded from all length figures. 215 of the 647 completed reigns (33%) ended without a single defense.

How the Numbers Were Made

The table reproduces the 18 per-division tables on the Wikipedia article List of WBC world champions, retrieved 13 September 2026, dropping only full-width note rows that carry no reign. Those tables are footnoted to the WBC's own results and to press reports. BoxRec was not used, so this is a table of reigns with defense counts, not a fight-by-fight record with results, methods or rounds.

Reign length in days is our calculation: the printed end date (or 13 September 2026 for a current champion) minus the printed start date. Where the source gives a start as day and month only, the year is the reign's end year, as the source's date ranges imply. 7 completed reigns print a month or year without a day and are shown with a dash. Interim, regular and diamond sub-titles are not separate columns; 29 rows note an interim champion being promoted to the full title.

Divisions were added at different dates, from heavyweight in 1963 to bridgerweight in 2020, so row counts per division partly reflect how long the division has existed. The decade comparison uses only completed reigns with both dates parsed, grouped by the year the reign began; the trend line is an ordinary least-squares fit of reign days on start year.
